As an agricultural city, the production of grain and oil
plays an important role. According to the statistics released
by National Statistics Department in 1994, Haiyang ranked
48 among the top 100 counties with regard to the gross
production value of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry
and fishing; 37 among the top 100 counties in terms of
the gross output of grain and oil. In 1986, it was listed
as a peanut-growing base for export by the state. In 1989,
it was set as a grain-growing base.
The grain-growing area in Haiyang is 640,000 mu with more
than 20 kinds of grain crops and 4 oil crops. The growing
area of grain and oil totals 1,250,000 mu, among which
500,000 mu is for wheat, 330,000 mu for corn, 70,000 mu
for sweet potato, 130,000 mu for soy and 240,000 mu for
peanut. Calculated on the growing area, the output of
grain crops averages 301 kgs per mu. The average per-mu
output is 248 kgs for wheat, 407 kgs for corn, 466 kgs
for sweet potato, 135 kgs for soy and 220 kgs for peanut.
The grain output totals 300,000 tons and the peanut output
50,000 tons.
Recently, Haiyang has quickened its step of adjusting
agricultural structure and the grain-growing area is decreasing.
The introduction of technology has helped stabilize the
production of grain and oil. With regard to growing wheat,
the techniques such as refined cowing, half refined cowing
and late sowing have been popularized. In growing corn,
the new varieties such as Ludan No.50, Denghai No.9 and
Ludan No.981 have got popularized. The innocuous technique
has been introduced to grow sweet potatoes and Huayu No.17
has been introduced in terms of growing peanuts. In addition,
new techniques such as chemical weeding, earth-measuring
formula fertilization, foliage fertilization, corruption-speeding
agent, integrated control of diseases and worms, dry farming,
solid planting, regulating plant growth and coating seeds
have been popularized. |
